Made in Akron, Ohio · Final run

Pressed on the same machine in Akron since 1979. Four inches that let you stand up on your own.

Walt Brenner, sixty-eight. Forty-five years at the press his father set up in 1962, making the knobs on America's washing machines. After his own knee replacement left him stuck on his own toilet, he built the seat he couldn't find in any store. Big Lou, the 1979 press that makes it, goes for scrap on November 2.

“I'd spent a week blaming my new knee. It was two inches of porcelain. The therapist's chair was seventeen. My toilet was fifteen.”

Why it stays put, when the drugstore riser slides

Four inches, not five

Most American home toilets sit 15 to 16 inches high. Four inches brings yours to about 19 to 20, where doctors' test chairs and accessible restrooms are, without the dangling feet that 5- and 6-inch risers cause. “Three wasn't enough to feel. Five and six, people's feet started hanging.”

Locked on both sides

A clamp on the left and one on the right slide under the rim of the bowl, and a toothed plate presses against the porcelain as you turn the knob. That is the difference from risers that just sit on top. “If you've just had a knee done, the last thing you want under you is a seat that slides.”

A base that wraps the rim

The lower edge of the seat curves down around the outside of the bowl, so it sits on the bowl instead of balancing on it. Together with the two clamps, it keeps the seat from shifting forward when you lean to stand up.

Looks like a regular seat

It comes with its own hinged lid and a groove at the front, so you lift it with one finger without touching the seat. With the lid down, most guests never notice. “I didn't want a hospital in my bathroom.”

Your own seat stays on

Nothing to unscrew. Fold your existing seat and lid up against the tank, set Walt's seat on the bowl and turn the two knobs hand-tight. About two minutes. Two turns back and it lifts off with one hand for cleaning or travel.

Made on Big Lou

Every seat is molded on the same 1979 press in Akron, and the knobs come from the design of Frank Brenner's washing-machine knob from the sixties. Walt pulls each one out of the mold himself. When the shelf is empty, there is no second batch.

“On a home visit, the toilet is one of the first things I measure, and it's almost always the lowest seat in the house. Most standard American toilets are 15 to 16 inches high. The chair we use to test leg strength is 17, and accessible restrooms are built at 17 to 19. Sitting higher can take a large share of the load off the knees when you stand, up to 60 percent in the studies. So when a family asks me about a raised seat, I tell them to look for three things: a clamp on both sides so it can't slide, a base that wraps the rim of the bowl, and a height that still lets your feet rest flat on the floor. Four inches does that on most toilets. And if the legs are very weak, add a grab bar screwed into a stud. The seat does the height, the bar does the rest.”

Quality you can check yourself

  • Clamps on both sides — turn the seat over and look. A lot of risers have one clamp at the front, or none at all.
  • A base that wraps the rim — the lower edge curves around the bowl, so the seat sits on it instead of balancing on top.
  • Its own lid with a front groove — looks like an ordinary toilet seat, and lifts without touching the seat.
  • One-piece molded plastic, rated to 300 lb — no seams to crack, no padding to soak up water, wipes clean with a damp cloth.
  • Final run from Akron — every seat made on Big Lou. After October 31 the shop closes, and on November 2 the press and mold go for scrap.
90DAYS

Ninety days to change your mind

Plenty of companies won't take a toilet seat back at all. Walt will. Put it on and live with it. If it isn't right for you, send it back within 90 days for a full refund. One email is all it takes. Free shipping within the US, and every order ships within 1–2 business days.

A note on fit and safe use

Fit: Walt's Lift Seat fits standard round and elongated bowls. To check yours, measure from the two bolts at the back of the seat to the front edge of the bowl: round is about 16½ inches, elongated about 18½. If your toilet has an unusual shape, such as some one-piece designer models, email us a photo before ordering.

Height: Measure your toilet from the floor to the top of the seat and add four inches. Sitting down, the seat should land at or just above the crease behind your knee, with both feet flat on the floor. If you are under about 5'2" and your feet don't reach, a small step stool fixes it.

Every day: Sit all the way back on the seat. Give both knobs a turn once a week, because plastic settles a little with daily use. Wipe with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner; avoid abrasive scrubbers.

What it doesn't do: It isn't a lift. It takes away the deep squat. If legs are very weak, pair it with a grab bar screwed into a wall stud. This seat is a home comfort product and does not replace the advice of your doctor or therapist.

Honestly I was a little nervous ordering something like this online but it showed up in two days and was packaged really well. The plastic feels super solid, not cheap at all like I expected for the price. I installed it myself in maybe five minutes and it has not moved once. My mom uses it every day and she loves it.

My daughter ordered this for me after my hip surgery and I have to say it made a real difference right away. Getting up on my own again feels so much better. The seat is sturdy and does not wobble at all. I was worried it would look bad in my bathroom but it honestly just looks like a normal toilet seat.

Came faster than I thought and the box was in perfect condition. Set it up in no time, the little knobs on the side tighten real easy. It fits my toilet perfectly and feels very secure when you sit down. Good quality for what it is, definitely not flimsy.

I have tried two other risers before this one and both of them cracked within a few months. This one feels way more solid and the plastic actually looks nice. Been using it for about six weeks now and zero issues. Delivery was quick too, came in three days with good packaging.

Got this for my dad who has been having trouble getting up lately. Installation was straightforward, took me less than ten minutes. The clamps grip the bowl really tight so there is no sliding around. He says it feels comfortable and he does not need help anymore in the morning. Worth every penny.

Shipping was fast and everything was in good shape when it arrived. The plastic is thick and feels like it will last a long time, nothing rattles or flexes when you sit on it. Easy to put on and easy to take off for cleaning. Does exactly what it says it does, no complaints at all.
