The German Engineer Who Wants You to Throw Out Your Cotton Swabs

Cotton swabs send roughly 34 American kids to the emergency room every single day. A medtech engineer in Stuttgart built the alternative he wanted for his own wife.

"I thought I was taking care of myself"

Anna Schneider used cotton swabs every single day for more than fifteen years. "I assumed it was just part of washing up," she says. She was 54 when she woke up one morning with a dull ache in her left ear.

"At first it was just little twinges. I figured it would sort itself out," she remembers. It got worse instead. Day after day. Sound started to flatten out. Everything felt muffled and far away, like she was listening through a wall.

Then the shock: After one particularly painful cleaning, she looked at the swab and saw blood. "That was the moment I knew this wasn't normal anymore."

What the specialist told her

The diagnosis was blunt. Her ear canal was almost completely blocked by compacted wax. Clearing it took several uncomfortable minutes of work with proper instruments.

This is not an unusual story, and the medical position on it is not ambiguous. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery publishes a plain-language list of things not to put in your ear, and cotton swabs are at the top of it, right alongside hair pins, car keys and toothpicks. Its clinical practice guideline on earwax warns that these can cut the ear canal, perforate the eardrum, or dislocate the small bones of the middle ear, which can mean hearing loss, dizziness and ringing.

An engineer decides to fix it himself

Anna's husband Martin was not willing to leave it there. A mechanical engineer, he had spent 25 years building precision instruments for medical applications.

"I watched how much pain Anna was in," he says. "If I can't help my own wife, what am I designing medical devices for?"

He started tinkering in his workshop in Stuttgart. Months of testing vibration frequencies, suction levels and silicone tip shapes. Anna was his first tester. "We build everything here in Baden-Württemberg, which means we can only make so many at a time," he says. "Demand has been the hard part, not the engineering."

The verdict
